Principle of Ultrafiltration System

Ultrafiltration technology is a membrane filtration method, also known as cross-filtration. Its basic principle is to filter in a cross-flow manner at a certain pressure and flow rate at room temperature, using asymmetric microporous structure and semipermeable membrane media, relying on the pressure difference on both sides of the membrane as a driving force, to intercept colloids, particles, and substances with relatively high molecular weight in water.

Its filtration accuracy is within the range of 0.005-0.01μm. Macromolecular substances and microparticles such as proteins, water-soluble polymers, bacteria, etc. are retained by the filter membrane, thereby achieving a new type of membrane separation technology for separation, classification, purification, and concentration.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Ultrafiltration System

Compared with traditional filtration methods, the pore size range of ultrafiltration equipment membrane is only 0.01 to 0.10 microns, which can filter most impurities and bacteria.

  • Effectively remove impurities such as suspended matter, colloidal particles, bacteria, viruses, and heavy metal ions in water to improve water quality safety
  • There is no phase change in the treatment process, and there is no adverse effect on the material composition. It is particularly suitable for the separation and concentration of heat-sensitive substances, such as drugs, enzymes, fruit juices, etc.
  • Ultrafiltration technology has high separation efficiency and is very effective for the recovery of trace components in dilute solutions and the concentration of low-concentration solutions
  • The ultrafiltration process only uses pressure as the power of membrane separation, so the separation device is simple, the process is short, the operation is simple, and it is easy to control and maintain

In terms of disadvantages, ultrafiltration equipment has high requirements for the quality of influent water.

More particulate matter or oil in the raw water may clog the membrane and affect the operation of the equipment. In addition, the effect of ultrafiltration water purifiers on removing chemical pollutants in water is not as good as that of reverse osmosis systems. Therefore, ultrafiltration equipment is also widely used as a pretreatment method for reverse osmosis systems.
